When you're trying to capture good directional sound on location a boom pole will be required. Boom poles are available in both short and long extending versions. The material used in their manufacture varies from aluminium to carbon fibre with carbon fibre being the most expensive. The advantage of carbon fibre is its weight and any serious boom operator will benefit from a carbon fibre boom pole.
