'FireWire' is an alternative name for the IEEE 1394 interface, better known (to consumers of Sony products, at least) as i.Link or DV input/output.
The Firewire cable connection offers high-speed communications and isochronous real-time data services. FireWire has replaced Parallel SCSI in many applications, due to lower implementation costs and a simplified; it is now a more adaptable cabling system.
IEEE 1394 has been adopted as the High Definition Audio-Video Network Alliance, known as (HANA) this is a standard connection interface for A/V (audio/visual) component communication and control. FireWire is also available in other versions such as:
- Wireless
- Fibre optic
- Coaxial using the isochronous protocols.
Since 1995, virtually all digital camcorders have included the Firewire connection. Many computers intended for home or professional audio/video use have built-in FireWire.
Firewire Cables come in a variety of Lengths although an inline repeater would be necessary when ranging over 20m.
