Headphones
For professional audio use, headphones are used to monitor signal sources and sound quality. They may be wired or wireless and worn in a variety of positions on and around the head or neck. They may have closed construction allowing no other sound to be heard or open construction allowing both the source signal and outside sounds to be heard by the user. The different types of headphones include:
Circum-aural - pads cover the ears, used in recording studios.
Supra-aural - similar to Circum-aural but pads are smaller and lighter and cover only the top of the ears.
Earphones - very small and portable and placed within the ear but outside the ear canal.
Canalphones - placed inside the ear canal and used with portable devices to block out external noise.
