Matte Boxes, Hoods & Shades
Matte Boxes and Lens Hoods are mounted on the front of the lens and primarily serve to reduce the glare on the lens from various light sources and to hold filters.
The original use of Matte Boxes was to hold a fake image known as a Matte or Cut Out through which a recording can be made. These are now rarely used due to the advent of Computer technology.
French Flags
Matte Boxes are larger than lens hoods and usually include adjustable 'French Flags' enabling flexibility in shading the lens from light. French Flags also fold flat keeping filters dust free when not in use.
Matte Boxes may be attached to the Camera by Rails or Clips. Rails are commonly used when a Matte Box is heavy to avoid damage to the lens and to allow freedom of movement for lenses with rotating front elements.
A wide range of camera matte boxes and professional quality lens hoods is available from Pro AV now.
