The cathode ray tube (CRT) had been the mainstay of television and production monitoring for the past 50 years. It notably switched from monochrome to colour, had high resolution and offered flexibility with inputs from composite to HDTV and both 4:3 and 16:9 monitoring capability.

Recently the CRT has come under increasing pressure due to a number of issues. The majority of CRT's have not met the strict compliance of ROHS (Restriction Of Hazardous Substances) which prohibit the sale of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than the agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury and other toxic materials. The increased performance and development of the thin film transistor liquid crystal display has added to the demise of the CRT with only a few manufacturers still offering this technology.
