A matrix router, or 'switcher', enables video, audio or both to be output to multiple destinations.
They can be anything from very simple mechanical switching units to highly sophisticated, programmable and remotely operated units routing the highest quality digital HD signals. A mechanical matrix switcher can cause picture glitches during the switch, whereas a vertical interval switcher that genlocks the sources will provide glitch-free switching.
