In 2003 Sony produced an optical disc based format known as XDCAM. This format offered a non-linear and re-recordable functionality. Late 2007 saw the European release of XDCAM EX , a tapeless format recording onto SxS Expresscard . As well as the cameras in the range, Sony also produced decks which act as drop in replacements for the more traditional VTR. The decks allow easy importation of the video data files into NLE systems and offer the discs to be used in a traditional tape based workflow environment.

Sony have a variety of decks including both mobile and studio based workflow solutions and models are available with a variety of connectivity and compatibility options such as , down conversion and up conversion, RS-422 control or I-Link and many more.
