Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

Bringing the shooting speed and video capabilities required by professional multimedia image-makers

Seize the moment in all situations with the 20MP EOS-1D X Mark II. With lightning fast and precise focusing, image quality with high latitude, incredible levels of detail and sharpness even in low light and 4K movies all from a CMOS sensor designed and made by Canon, the EOS-1D X Mark II enhances the professional photographer’s creative workflow as never before.

20.2 Megapixel Full Frame CMOS Sensor
A 20.2 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with high latitude, developed and made by Canon, reduces noise at both high and low ISO speeds. This exceptional sensor features gapless microlenses to ensure high image quality under all shooting conditions. Gapless lenses mean that no light is lost between each pixel as all the light falling on the sensor is funneled into the pixels below. This improves light gathering capacity and increases the signal-to-noise ratio.

With increase in the number of recording pixels, compared to the EOS-1D X, the 20.2 MP in EOS-1D X Mark II enable more cropping abilities while still retaining exceptional level of detail. At the same time, the increased exposure latitude allows compositions to be over and/or under exposed without much loss of details.

High ISO Sensitivity
A high ISO range offers a wider range of shooting opportunities. Speed is of the essence in any professional situation, and greater ISO flexibility is particularly useful when shooting in low-light and near-dark locations. How high an ISO speed you can shoot at and yet still retain critical image quality has always been the big quest, which is where EOS-1D X Mark II scores. With a top native ISO speed of 51200, the EOS-1D X Mark II can be expanded further still to ISO 409600 for shooting in very dark locations. And flexibility doesn't stop there. Even in Auto ISO mode shutter speeds up to 1/8000sec are possible, as is exposure compensation in Manual mode.

In-camera Lens Aberration Correction
When the original EOS-1D X launched, it included peripheral brightness correction and chromatic aberration correction functions, while a further distortion correction function was included in the EOS 7D Mark II. Evolving these in-camera processing options, the EOS-1D X Mark II includes these along with a new diffraction correction function that is applied to JPEG images during shooting. This function allows photographers to work at smaller apertures without any concerns over image quality degradation caused by diffraction.

In the past it was necessary to register lens correction data using EOS Utility software. In EOS-1D X Mark II, however, the peripheral brightness, chromatic aberration correction and distortion correction lens data is already stored in camera, removing the need to correct lens aberrations in JPEGs via a computer. This feature also accepts data from any future lenses that have aberration correction data built-in, making it unnecessary to register data using EOS Utility.

Built-in Digital Lens Optimizer
With the EOS-1D X, Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software provided solutions for correcting various lens and image aberrations. On the EOS-1D X Mark II, these correction functions are built into the camera with a dedicated Digital Lens Optimizer function.

Digital Lens Optimizer imitates lens performance, with a series of mathematical functions replicating each stage of the journey of light through the optical path. Using this information, the Digital Lens Optimizer can correct a range of typical optical aberrations and loss of resolution caused by a camera’s low pass filter, by applying an inverse function to each shot to take the image nearer to how the scene appears to the naked eye. This creates detailed, high-quality images providing photographers great flexibility of working with large or small apertures without worrying about aberrations and diffractions.

While the lens aberration corrections can be applied to JPEG files as the images are being shot, Digital Lens Optimizer is applied during in-camera RAW processing.

Fine Detail Picture Style
The ‘Fine Detail’ Picture Style originally developed for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R has been included in the EOS-1D X Mark II to maximise the amount of detail captured by the cameras’ 20.2 Megapixel sensor. This setting prioritises gradation of tones and emphasises fine detail. Fine Detail is intended for images that will be used straight from the camera, without post-production.

Fine Detail Picture Style features three adjustable sharpening parameters, which give more control over the sharpening performed in-camera on JPEG files. The parameters are similar to those found in the Unsharp Mask filter in Adobe Photoshop and Canon’s DPP software.

The ‘Strength’ slider adjusts how much sharpening is applied to edges in the image. The ‘Fineness’ slider determines the size of the details that are sharpened, move it to the left to sharpen smaller details. The ‘Threshold’ slider specifies how much contrast there needs to be in a part of the picture before it is considered an edge and sharpened. At low settings even subtle edges can be sharpened.

AWB: Ambience Priority/White Priority
The EOS-1D X Mark II features a choice of Auto White Balance (AWB) settings that take a different approach to artificial light. ‘Ambience Priority’ aims to retain some of the warm colour tones from artificial light sources in order to preserve some of the atmosphere of a scene, similar to the conventional AWB setting on other EOS cameras, while ‘White Priority’ eliminates most of the warmth from tungsten lighting and tries to give colour-neutral images where possible.

360k RGB+IR Metering Sensor
The camera has an RGB+IR metering sensor with 360,000 effective pixels (736 x 496 near WVGA resolution). Evaluative metering and evaluative flash metering are based on the information detected by the sensor. The sensor includes IR pixels that detect infrared (IR) light, which helps the EOS Scene Detection System analyse scenes and improve AF precision. The IR pixels, together with the RGB pixels are also used to detect brightness, colour and faces in a scene. In addition to taking distance information into account, the algorithm recognises a subject based on face detection and colour information.

The metering sensor is supported by a dedicated DIGIC 6 processor, which processes all the colour information and face detection data to recognise shooting subjects with outstanding accuracy.

EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (EOS iTR) System
The face detection abilities of the 360,000 pixel RGB+IR sensor along with its colour tracking information are passed onto the EOS iTR AF system. On the EOS-1D X Mark II, EOS iTR AF includes the improved algorithms found on the EOS 7D Mark II that greatly enhance the overall subject tracking performance.

In addition to face priority mode, a subject tracking mode has been added for moments when a face is not always visible, and when the main subject is not a person.

AI Servo AF III+
Canon’s AI servo AF III+ features an AF algorithm that, along with the EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (EOS iTR) system, improves the tracking sensitivity in scenes where subject movements may occur suddenly, delivering precise and accurate focusing even in situations where focusing is difficult.

The EOS-1D X Mark II features six AF Case study settings to help you choose the most appropriate option for your subject. These case studies provide different setups for the three different AF preference settings of Tracking Sensitivity, Acceleration/Deceleration tracking and AF Point Auto Switching. These parameters can be further customised based on personal preferences.

61-point Expanded Autofocus Area
Increasing the area covered by the AF points is a much requested feature by photographers, be they professional or amateur. In the EOS-1D X Mark II, the AF points have been placed over a wider area – an 8 percent more vertical expansion in the central area, and 24 percent more vertical expansion in the peripheral area – giving greater freedom in where subjects can be placed when composing.

41 cross-type and 5 dual cross-type AF1 points further extend the reach of the EOS-1D X Mark II’s focus capabilities. Cross type AF points provide greater autofocus precision over a wider area of the frame ensuring correct focus, important for fast moving subjects. All 61 AF and 41 cross-type AF points are individually selectable.

AF Point Selection
Use all 61 AF points together, or group them into moveable zones that cover off-center subjects. Alternatively, select just a single AF point to focus precisely on a specific part of the scene.

The Large Zone that was popular on the EOS 7D Mark II has been added to EOS-1D X Mark II, enabling tracking of moving subjects and making it really effective for precise compositions when the subject is at speed.

61 AF Points, With 21 Cross-type AF Points at f/8
Wildlife and sports photographers often have to use super telephoto lenses with extenders to get closer to their subjects. This limits the AF usability because of the resulting f/8 aperture setting. The 1-point f/8 AF compatibility on the 1D X has been significantly increased to a maximum of 61 points on the EOS-1D X Mark II, with 21 cross-type points. The Zone AF - which makes subject tracking easy - and EOS iTR AF provides powerful subject tracking support even with super telephoto and extender shooting.

Auto Focus at EV-3
The AF system makes it easier to keep the subject in focus, even in challenging light. The AF low-intensity limit has been improved to EV-33, making it easy to shoot in scenes where autofocusing was previously impossible or too slow and inaccurate, such as dark locations.

Red Illuminated AF Point Display
A feature first found on the EOS-1D Mark IV, the AF frame displayed in red has been reintroduced based on feedback from EOS-1D X users. Along with the illuminated frame display, the EOS Intelligent Scene Analysis System and red super imposition display optical system have been brought to the EOS-1 series. Because it is easy to identify the AF point in dark places and easy to instantly select an AF point, framing is made easier in low-light conditions.

Flicker Detection
Under flickering light such as fluorescents, using a faster shutter speed may result in irregular exposures and colours due to the light’s flicker frequency. EOS-1D X Mark II – like the EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 5DS R and EOS 5DS – detects flicker frequency of light sources and adapts the shooting timings to capture the image near peak brightness to reduce flicker effects. This function works with a flicker frequency of 100Hz and 120Hz and has an improved algorithm to prevent the incorrect detection of flickering light.

14 fps with Full AF/AE Tracking, 16 fps in Live View Shooting
Professional photographers never get a second chance. Therefore increasing the chances of capturing decisive moments like a goal celebration or crossing the finish line, and capturing them accurately with superb sharpness are primary concerns. Canon engineers recognise this and have achieved a maximum mirror drive speed of 14 fps with full AF/AE tracking.

Shooting in Live View mode raises the performance bar even higher, enabling 16 fps continuous capture when focus and exposure is fixed at the first shot. This frame rate exceeds the previous EOS-1D X mirror lock up maximum speed with the additional advantage that it is still possible to see the scene in Live View, as it is being captured.

Maximum high-speed continuous shooting speed with fully charged LP-E19 battery pack, 1/1000 sec. or faster shutter speed, ISO 51,200 or lower and max. aperture (depending on the lens).

Dual "DIGIC 6+" Processors
For the 20.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor to perform the high-speed signal readout, the EOS-1D X Mark II uses a front-end processing circuit together with the Dual “DIGIC 6+” processors for high-speed signal processing. The incredible power of these processors enables increased latitude, improved noise reduction at both high and low ISO range, renders images with the natural skin tones Canon is known for, applies various lens corrections in real time to JPEG images even when shooting at approx. 16 fps in Live View and records movies at DCI 4K up to 60 fps or in Full HD up to 120 fps.

Rapid-Return Mirror Technology
To achieve the high frame rates EOS-1D X Mark II is capable of, and to deliver fast accurate AF, it is vital that there is virtually zero mirror bounce and the mirrors return to their positions as quickly and as precisely as possible. To achieve this, EOS-1D X Mark II features a two-motor system with separate high-torque motors to drive the mirror and shutter cocking. This allows high speed but also isolates the two different stages from affecting each other. The mirror drive motor and shutter cocking motor have a floating support made of an elastic material. This reduces operating noise and ensures there is minimal vibration when shooting.

CFast 2.0™ Media
EOS-1D X Mark II is the first EOS stills camera to feature a CFast 2.0™ card slot in addition to CompactFlash card slot. CFast 2.0™ is similar in size to CompactFlash but has recessed contacts making the card more robust and less likely to suffer issues related to bent pins. CFast 2.0™ currently has a write speed of up to 440MB/s, which is three times faster than the fastest CompactFlash (150 MB/s). Such fast write speeds allow a continuous RAW shooting burst of 170 full resolution images. Additionally, exFAT format support removes the 4 GB file size limitation, doing away with the necessity to merge files when recording movies.

High Resolution Touch-panel LCD Screen
High quality photographs from the EOS-1D X Mark II should be seen on a high-quality LCD monitor the moment they are taken. To make this possible, EOS-1D X Mark II features the Clear View LCD II with an aspect ratio of 3:2 and an unchanged 3.2-inch monitor size. The pixel density of the screen has been increased by approximately 1.25 x, with the number of dots increased to 1.62 million when compared to the EOS-1D X.

The capacitive touch screen allows for easy selection or switching of AF points and for magnified view when shooting in Live View or Movie shooting modes.

Intelligent Viewfinder II
As a professional the last thing you want to do is take your eye off the action. Time spent away from the viewfinder risks missing a crucial moment, which is why Canon engineers have listened carefully to feedback from the EOS community and brought more information to the EOS-1D X Mark II viewfinder, which can be customised to suit the needs of the photographer. It is now easy to change settings and check camera status without removing your eye from the viewfinder.

Check and change all settings in the viewfinder including shooting mode, metering mode, white balance and drive mode as well as be alerted for Flicker detection.

Approximately 100 percent view through the viewfinder ensures you can see the entire frame you’re capturing while a 20mm eye-point gives an immersive view of the action in front of the camera, making it easy to frame the image exactly the way you want it.

Dual Axis Electronic Level
A Dual Axis Electronic Level helps photographers to keep the camera level when shooting – a bonus when striving for straight horizons, or when shooting architecture. Both pitch (forward-backward) and roll (side-to-side) movement is detected in 1˚ increments, and the level is shown both in the viewfinder (above the focusing points) and on the LCD screen, making it a useful tool at night when reference points are hard to see in the viewfinder.

Custom Quick Control Screen
Every photographer works differently and has particular requirements when it comes to checking and changing shooting information and parameters. With ease of workflow in mind, it is possible to change the type, size and position of icons on the camera’s Custom Quick Control screen quickly and easily, so favourite settings can be found without fuss.

Enhanced Durability and Reliability
As a flagship professional model, the EOS-1D X Mark II is two steps ahead of other EOS DSLRs in terms of design and testing standards. The EOS-1D X Mark II shutter is designed to work for approximately 400,000 cycles, and with such a high level of performance, the mirror and associated controls have been designed to match that level of ability.

Not only are the inner drive mechanisms designed and evaluated for overall durability as a pro model, but even the buttons and controls used by the photographer are tested for the same level of durability.

Magnesium Alloy Construction, Ultimate Weather Resistance
In line with previous EOS-1 series cameras, the EOS-1D X Mark II is designed for continued professional use in harsh environments. It features the same dust and drip-proof construction as the EOS-1D X, using a total of 76 seals around buttons and body joints to help keep water and dust out of the internals. When combined with Canon L-series EF lenses and Speedlite 600EX-RT flashgun, the weather sealing is maintained with rubber gaskets around the joining points. Combined with the magnesium alloy body shell and internal structure, the camera is rigid and rugged and ready for heavy-duty professional use.

Heat Dispersal
When shooting movies or capturing images continuously via high-speed mode for a long time without breaks, the CMOS sensor and Dual "DIGIC 6+" processors deal with a massive amount of data, which in turn generates a significant amount of heat. This heat is transferred from the sensor and processors to the top of the battery chamber and dissipates via a special heat pipe, ensuring the camera is always ready for use.

The EOS-1D X Mark II heat dispersal system, along with the powerful processors, enables continuous 4K video recording of up to 29 min 59 sec.

Immerse your audience with edge-of-your-seat definition.
The power of 4K resolution brings your stories to life. Shoot internally on CFast 2.0™ (recommended) media in 4K (4096 x 2160) up to 60p or Full HD up to 120p for slow motion creativity. Focus easily and accurately with touch panel LCD and Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which provides amazing AF tracking in movies and Live View mode and works with all Canon EF lenses.

Maximise the shoot time. Minimise everything else.
SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and Gigabit connectivity via Ethernet or the WFT-E8 WiFi adapter brings superb workflow flexibility to any location while the built-in GPS can auto-update time whenever you change a time-zone by connecting to a global network of GPS satellites. The crop and resize functionality lets you send the frame as you want it to be seen, without the need for a PC.
