How the DS Coating Works
Canon’s DS (Defocus Smoothing) coating produces a soft and unique defocus effect, where an originally sharp outline in a defocused image is further blurred with exceptional smoothness. Canon has achieved this effect by using the same optics as the RF 85mm F1.2L USM and making use of vapor-deposition technology to control the amount of light passing into the lens.

The DS Coating with its DS effect is used on two elements in different locations within the lens, achieving soft, smooth defocus rendering. However, the coating results in a loss of light transmission giving a T stop of T2.2.

L-Series Build Quality and Weather-Sealing
The build quality is distinctly L-series with weather-sealing and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements to guard against dust and water.

Fast USM Motor and Lens Control Ring
Thanks to the fast speed of the RF mount, the RF 85mm F1.2L USM is fast to lock onto a subject while the Lens Control Ring provides additional control over settings.

Please note:
1 In order to use this lens with the EOS R or EOS RP, a compatible version of firmware is required. Download the latest camera firmware from the Canon web site and install it on your camera.

2 Since the transmittance of the lens periphery decreases due to the DS coating, brightness of the lens at maximum aperture is about 1⅓ stops darker than f/1.2. By updating the camera to the latest firmware, exposure control in AE will be performed appropriately.
