HXR-NX100 NXCAM camcorder comes with Sony’s unique 20 mega pixel 1.0-type Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor that delivers high resolution and fantastic low light performance, as well as offering more depth of field control as demanded by today’s diverse shooting requirements.
Three independent manual lens rings provide excellent creative control. A fixed Sony G series lens achieves 12x optical zoom, which can be doubled to 24x with Clear Image Zoom making use of the 1.0 type sensor to still deliver a native resolution 1920x1080 image. You can also double the zoom again using a sophisticated Digital Extender for a maximum 48x zoom.
There is also a ND Filter function, allowing you to choose four conventional mechanical ND filter positions that will enhance your ability to work in any shooting scenario. The HXR-NX100 also has the ability to record AVCHD, DV and XAVC S 50Mbps for multiple choices and high quality images.
Professional audio quality is made easy thanks to XLR connectors as standard and Multi Interface (MI) Shoe supporting fully integrated wireless audio solutions, such as Sony’s UWP-D range.
High sensitivity and high resolution
Thanks to the 1.0 type Exmor R CMOS sensor, the HXR-NX100 has high sensitivity - 1.67 stops brighter than a 1/2.88-type sensor. The camcorder also has higher resolution than any other camcorder in its price range. The 1.0 type sensor is brighter and offers more bokeh with a shallow depth of field than 1/2.88-type or smaller sensors.
Sony G lens
The "G Lens" is Sony’s original camera lens, designed and manufactured to the highest standards of optical performance. Through original Sony technologies, the "G Lens" achieves superb clarity and sharpness that maximizes the performance of Sony’s advanced imaging sensors and camera systems.The HXR-NX100 is supplied with a fixed 29 mm wide-angle Sony G lens. Ideal for capturing grand landscapes, it also provides up to 12x optical zoom.
Clear Image Zoom
The 12x optical zoom can be doubled to 24x with Clear Image Zoom which is a Sony unique technology that incorporates By Pixel Super Resolution Technology that analyzes the input image to maintain full resolution. In addition, Digital Extender can double this range again, up to 48x zoom.

The HXR-NX100 features an all-new chassis designed around its class-leading 1.0 type Exmor R CMOS sensor. ND filter control mechanism
The HXR-NX100 is equipped with a ND Filter function, allowing you to choose four conventional mechanical ND filter positions (Clear, 1/4ND, 1/16ND and 1/64ND) for better exposure and depth of field control in bright scene).
Dual media slots, “SIMUL” or “RELAY” recording, and independent record control
The HXR-NX100 is equipped with two memory card slots. The camcorder is compatible with SDXC and SDHC cards as well as Memory Stick PRO Duo (Mark 2) and Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo. Two media slots can record in either “SIMUL” or “RELAY” mode. “SIMUL” mode permits simultaneous recording to two memory cards, while “RELAY” mode automatically switches recording from the first to the second memory card when the first is full. The user can set up the two Start/Stop buttons on the HXR-NX100, one on the grip and one on the camcorder body, to independently start and stop recording on different memory cards while recording in “SIMUL” mode.
Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe
The MI Shoe expands your options to use accessories without cables, such as HVL-LBPC Video Light and the UWP-D wireless microphone series.
High resolution LCD and EVF

You can fine-tune the look of movies before shooting by adjusting parameters such as gamma, knee, black level, color model /level/phase and more. Adjusted parameters can be saved along with other settings as a profile, and up to six profiles can be stored for later recall.

It is possible to save up to 99 camera settings under different profile numbers. User can copy the settings from one HXR-NX100 to another HXR-NX100 so that user can shoot with multiple cameras in the same settings*. What are the advantages of a single 1.0 type sensor?
The HXR-NX100’s single 20.2 megapixel 1.0 type Exmor R CMOS sensor is approximately the same size as a 16mm film frame. The key benefit of this large size is low noise and less blur because more light reaches the sensor, offering clear and steady pictures even in a dark scene. The large sensor size also enables beautiful background defocusing (bokeh) to enable you to focus on what you want to show and defocus the rest of the image.
Most cameras in this class use 3CMOS 1/4.7 type sensors in an effort to keep costs under control. The HXR-NX100’s 1.0 type sensor is approximately four times larger in size than even the three sensors combined, with high resolution. Consequently, we believe the HXR-NX100 offers a step-change in imaging performance in its category.
Why doesn’t this model support 4K recording? Is there any firmware updating plan?
The HXR-NX100 has been designed from the start to provide the absolute best performance for Full-HD production scenarios. It provides multiple choices, including AVCHD and DV, which are suitable for conventional workflows, as well as the newly implemented XAVC S 50Mbps, which delivers better image quality. We believe this is where most target users will be working with this camcorder and wanted to fully dedicate the performance of the camera to Full-HD. Currently there is no firmware updating plan to support 4K or other features.
What is XAVC S and why does it matter?
XAVC S offers stunning picture quality, above all, but also workflow flexibility and storage efficiency. The XAVC S format was developed by Sony in April 2013, building on the basic concept of the original XAVC format used for professional recording and is already supported by all the major NLEs. The NX100 also supports AVCHD and DV recording, so it’s easy to stay with those established workflows, but we think most people will quickly move to XAVC S.
In XAVC S, the HXR-NX100 uses the MP4 file format, sampling at 4:2:0 8-bit 50 Mbps. Compared to AVCHD, XAVC S 50Mbps captures more details and less noise thanks to the higher bitrate of XAVC S.
How does the HXR-NX100 compare with Sony’s PXW-X70 and HXR-NX3?
As you would expect, a higher price point for the PXW-X70 and HXR-NX3 offers some significant advantages for those who need higher performance.
The PXW-X70 is widely regarded as an optimum second camcorder for high-end professional models such as PXW-X180/X160. Compared with the HXR-NX100, the PXW-X70 has many similar characteristics but the PXW-X70 also includes XAVC-L with 4:2:2 10-bit recordings and even 4K resolution for higher picture quality, as well as Wi-Fi, 3G-SDI and an even more compact body.
For the HXR-NX3, its advantages are a higher image quality from its 3 chip 1/3 type CMOS sensors and brighter lens, greater zoom range, built-in video light with a larger body size for stable shooting.
The specification of the lens of HXR-NX100 seems the same as that of PXW-X70. Do they share the same optical design?
No, the lens of HXR-NX100 was specifically designed for it with Sony’s unique optical and mechanical engineering expertise. Although its specification is similar to that of PXW-X70, its optical and mechanical construction is not the same as PXW-X70’s.
