Recently, we made a video comparing Sennheiser's range of lav mics. But since we released that video, Sennheiser has released a new microphone, the MKE Essential.
The MKE Essential sits in the middle of Sennheiser's lineup, between the ME2 and the MKE 2. So what are the differences? Well compared to the ME2 the MKE Essential has a much smaller mic capsule which is sweat resistant, much like the MKE 2. The MKE Essential shares the same copper cable as the ME2, and has the same build quality, unlike the higher end MKE 2 which has a much more robust, steel cable.
So why would you buy the MKE Essential lav mic, over Sennheisers existing offerings? Well, we're actually considering to upgrade from our ME2 mics to the MKE Essential on this channel. For us, the main selling point is the smaller form factor, which makes it much easier to hide when we're shooting outside. When we're not in the showroom, we always stick them to the skin under clothing (with Rycote Overcovers) to protect from the wind. The added sweat resistance that the mic offers if another plus for us when sticking directly to the skin. The MKE Essential also comes with a much better clip than the ME2
